History

The CERN Golf Club was founded by constitutional assembly in October 1982, by a small group of enthusiasts eager to introduce many others to the joys and frustrations of this , at that time, elite sport. The assembly was rapidly followed by the first competition, 'Le Coupe du Pro', on the 24th October at the Golf Club of Evian. The announcement of the day for this competition shows a list of 7 tee-offs for 20 participants, and invites interested persons who wish to come along as spectators to equip themselves with jogging shoes! Presumably everyone played a lot quicker in those days than they seem to manage at the present time! Raymond Gregoire and Paul Queru were the principal founder members of the club.

This autumnal demonstration seems to have had the desired effect because in 1983 the membership list had jumped to 35, a figure at which it stabilized for several years. Around 1986 , in accordance with an increase of interest in golf in general, a considerable expansion took place, with membership increasing every year to reach levels of over 100 members. It should be noted that the possibilities of playing golf locally have similarly increased and that whilst those initial twenty golfers had a choice of playing three local golf courses, our members today are faced with the dilemma of choosing any one of the many courses within a motoring distance of 90 minutes.

In 1991 the CERN Golf Club became an affiliated Corporate Association with the French Golf Federation (FFG), in the Rhone-Alpes League. This gave the club the right to participate (already with great success) in the French Cup, to issue licences and to officially manage handicaps via the central FFG server in Paris.
